Sunrise over Kyoto

The sun rose over Kyoto on March 15, 2011 with an eerie haze. It was just 4 days after the quake hit the eastern coast of Japan. I had decided to go back to Tokyo to catch my flight the next day for Thailand, even though the tremors were still occurring. Tokyo was only 150 km from the epicentre.

We had been quite fortunate up to this point as our tour had been miles away on the eastern side of the island country and I would not have to travel alone, as had been originally planned.
Megumi, our intrepid tour leader, convinced me to carry on with her, despite the uncertainty around transportation and power.  At least, I would have company......
News was mostly second hand as there were no English speaking t v stations and no public wifi for the Internet! Disconcerting to say the least.
